A modern living room with an open staircase and garden glazing

Light becomes the organising material.

A courtyard gives the study its centre. Shared rooms face the garden; quieter rooms sit behind a private threshold. The plan offers connection without making every space do the same work.

Natural timber, pale mineral surfaces and woven textiles create a calm transition from garden to interior. Finish and shading are considered together.

The anatomy of a considered space.

Circulation

Openings frame the principal views. Integrated storage keeps circulation useful, and layered lighting gives each area its own evening atmosphere.

Layered light

Daylight, working light and a softer evening layer are coordinated with furniture and controls.

Material junctions

Edges, grain and adjoining finishes are resolved together. Approved samples travel with the specification.

A view is part of the plan.

Two decisions to revisit when translating this concept into a real project.

A threshold between shared and private

Compare what is visible from the entrance with the quieter rooms beyond it. A connected plan can still offer privacy.

    Surfaces in changing light

Review timber and mineral samples beside the glazing and in the shaded areas. The palette should make sense in both conditions.
