Two armchairs beside a fireplace and fitted bookcases

An ordinary room, made quietly useful.

One generous chair gives the plan a starting point. Books, useful storage and a small working surface sit within easy reach without filling the room.

Wool and woven curtains soften sound. Timber shelves give books a warm backdrop, while upholstery is selected for everyday care as well as touch.

The anatomy of a considered space.

Circulation

Task lighting brings light to the reader. A softer secondary layer illuminates the bookcase and lets the room change after sunset.

Layered light

Daylight, working light and a softer evening layer are coordinated with furniture and controls.

Material junctions

Edges, grain and adjoining finishes are resolved together. Approved samples travel with the specification.

    Small adjustments, a different atmosphere.

Two decisions to revisit when translating this concept into a real project.

    Light beside the reader

Place a task light where it reaches the page without entering the seated line of sight. Test the position with the actual chair.

    Books within a useful reach

Keep frequently used books and objects close. Compare shelf depth with the collection rather than filling the wall with a standard module.
