Illustrative interiors / GRAIN material studies

Choose
your ground.

Read the grain. Compare the tone. Then see a physical sample in the light of your own room.

5 material studies

Digital colour studies, not product swatches. Species, grade and finishing system must be confirmed from actual samples.

One material.
Three directions.

Pattern changes the way a room reads. Begin with its proportions, not a small sample alone.

Illustrative room with interlocking herringbone blocks

Herringbone

An interlocking rhythm. Rectangular blocks meet at right angles; centre lines and perimeter cuts need careful setting-out.

Illustrative layout study. Confirm product dimensions and installation drawings.

Keep the character.
Change the finish.

Not every worn floor needs replacing. Start with a survey of its construction, wear depth, fixings and moisture conditions.

Survey & substrate
Record the existing construction, moisture conditions, levels and access. Resolve the supporting floor before selecting the installation system.
Layout & preparation
Agree the centre line, direction, borders and thresholds. Follow the chosen product’s acclimatisation and preparation instructions.
Installation & finishing
Use compatible materials and the specified expansion provisions. Check the selected finish against the way the room will be used.
Care for the long run
Allow the required drying and curing time. Keep the product references and a written maintenance plan for the next chapter.

Plan the first numbers.

Start with a rectangular room. Add an indicative cutting allowance to understand the scale of the material requirement.

Planning estimate only. Confirm the measured area, laying pattern, allowance and product pack sizes with your installer. Irregular rooms need a measured plan.

Before the first board.

Can timber floors work with underfloor heating?

Only with an approved flooring and installation system. Confirm the product’s temperature limits, moisture requirements and commissioning procedure.

Should I choose oil or lacquer?

Compare the appearance and maintenance of the actual finishing system. Neither option removes the need for appropriate cleaning, protection and periodic care.

What should I bring to a first conversation?

Room dimensions, photographs, the property location, timing and any information about the subfloor or heating. An initial conversation does not replace an on-site assessment.
