How to read a certificate, and what it does not tell you

A grading report is a description, not a verdict. Two stones with identical reports can look entirely different.

What the report covers

Proportions, colour, clarity, weight, fluorescence, and the plot of inclusions. All measurable, all repeatable, all useful.

What it does not

Where the inclusions are. A VS2 with everything under a claw beats a VS1 with a feather in the middle of the table, and no grade tells you that — only looking does.

It also says nothing about how the stone behaves in motion, which is most of what you notice when you wear it.
