URARTU / DEMO FIELD GUIDE

Slate Hardware
Elements & details.

A product launch page in tiles: white bento tiles of different sizes on a soft grey ground, each carrying one fact at display size — the claim, the noise floor, the hours on the mill — then the specification as a second, mirrored grid. How it is made, two configurations, press quotes as tiles, and a reservation instead of a cart. Inter throughout; no catalogue and no shop plugin needed.

Reviews

We put a decibel meter next to it and could not tell from the reading whether it was switched on. That is the whole review, really — everything else is a specification you can read yourself.

Field Notes
Review, March

Eleven screws, all the same size, and a storage module you can reach without removing anything else. Whoever laid this out has repaired computers for a living.

The Bench
Teardown

Six months in a room where we record. It has never once been the reason we stopped a take, which is not something we can say about any machine we have owned.

A milling machine cutting an aluminium part

    The making of it

Forty-one hours, and eleven kilos of swarf

Every chassis starts as a solid billet of 7000-series aluminium weighing fourteen kilos. Three kilos of it leave the building as a computer; the rest is chips, and they go back to the smelter we bought the billet from. Machining a case out of one piece is a slow and expensive way to make a box. It is the only way to make the case and the heatsink the same object, which is what removes the fan — and the fan is the part that fails, the part that gets loud at four in the afternoon, and the part that lets dust in.
